Mexico - Merida

Merida, founded in 1542 on the ruins of a large Maya settlement, is the largest city in the Yucatan Region. It has many colonial buildings of interest and a great museum of Mayan artefacts.

Colonial sculpture, not an ancient artefact, but quite interesting.

The head from a figure situated at Kabah Palace (see the pictures of Kabah Palace and you can see were the head once was).

Note the 'tattoo' like markings around the eye, reminiscent of Maori warrior tattoos.

The deformed skull of a Maya, deformed at birth for religious beliefs

Deformed skull, some have stated that it is of an alien 'grey', although this is unlikely.
